  Both PFA and PTFE are widely used raw materials, so what are the specific differences between the two? First, briefly introduce the basic properties of the two:

  1. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

  Ordinary PTFE pipes are white and opaque, mainly including conduits, hoses, pipe lining pipes, braided reinforced pipes, etc. PTFE tube has excellent high and low temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance. It can transport liquid or gas at a temperature of up to 260°C. It has high chemical purity and is most suitable for a wide range of continuous working temperature requirements. The excellent electrical properties of PTFE tube also make it the most suitable material in the electronics and electrical fields. It is mainly used for electrical insulation sheaths, chemical transportation, heat exchangers, medical urinary catheters and surgical vascular bypass.

   

  2. Tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether copolymer (PFA) 

  The physical, electrical and chemical properties of PFA are similar to those of polytetrafluoroethylene. It is a copolymer of a small amount of perfluoropropyl perfluorovinyl ether and polytetrafluoroethylene. The melt adhesion is enhanced, the melt viscosity is reduced, and the performance is unchanged compared with polytetrafluoroethylene. This kind of resin can be directly processed into products by ordinary thermoplastic molding methods. The long-term use temperature is -80-260 degrees. It has excellent chemical resistance, corrosion resistance to all chemicals, the lowest friction coefficient among plastics, and good electrical properties. Its electrical insulation is not affected by temperature.

  The main difference between the two is:

  1. Different in nature

  1. PFA: It is a copolymer of a small amount of perfluoropropyl perfluorovinyl ether and polytetrafluoroethylene.

  2. PTFE: a polymer compound formed by polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene.

  Two, the characteristics are different

  1. PFA characteristics:

  (1) Crystal material, low moisture absorption. It can be processed into products by thermoplastic processing methods.

  (2) The fluidity is poor, and it is easy to decompose, and corrosive gas is generated during decomposition. The molding temperature does not exceed 475°C, the mold is heated to 150-200°C, and the pouring system has low resistance to material flow.

  (3) Translucent pellets, injection molding and extrusion molding. Molding temperature 350-400℃, 475℃ and above will easily cause discoloration or blistering. Pay attention to the difficulty of demolding.

  (4) Due to the corrosion effect of molten material on metal, long-term production requires chrome plating on the mold.

  2. PTFE characteristics:

  (1) High temperature resistance: long-term use temperature 200~260℃;

  (2) Low temperature resistance: softer at -100°C;

  (3) Corrosion resistance: resistant to aqua regia and all organic solvents;

  (4) Weather resistance: the best aging life of plastics;

  (5) High lubrication: with the smallest coefficient of friction in plastics (0.04);

  (6) Non-sticky: It has the smallest surface tension among solid materials without adhering to any substance.

  Comparison between the two:

  1. PFA is a melt-processable thermoplastic. PFA pipe has excellent stress crack resistance and bending life, but its permeability is not as good as PTFE.

  2. The two have almost the same high temperature resistance (maximum working temperature 220 degrees), acid and alkali corrosion resistance, but PTFE has high hardness and is not easy to process and shape, even if it is processed into a pipe, it is easy to break. PFA introduces alkoxy groups into the main chain structure of PTFE, which effectively reduces its hardness and greatly improves its plasticity, while maintaining good high temperature resistance, acid and alkali corrosion resistance. However, the processing technology of these two materials in China is relatively backward.
